About Mountain Weather UK
Mountain Weather UK (MWUK) is the ultimate mobile phone mountain weather app, dedicated to providing forecasts, observations and maps for mountain regions across the UK, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland. Whether you are climbing, walking, skiing or mountain biking, MWUK puts essential weather information at your fingertips — clear, hazard‑first summaries to help you plan and stay safe. Making Mountain Weather Smarter.
History
MWUK launched in October 2015 on the App Store and Google Play. As a keen mountain walker, climber and developer, I was frustrated by the lack of a focused UK mountain weather app — so I built one. Early feedback was very positive (see an early hands‑on review from November 2015 by Alex Roddie). The original app used the Met Office DataPoint service for forecasts, synoptic maps and observations and enjoyed steady use and mainly positive reviews over the following years.
Why I re‑wrote the app
When the Met Office announced the retirement of DataPoint, I needed a new data strategy. That prompted a full rewrite of a new mobile app and a new server API to compute regional and summit forecasts. The new pipeline uses another data provider but still continues to use the Met Office forecast models, and still sources the observation and map data from the Met Office.
